You did the sum on the way back in from the bin.
Not deliberately. You put the bag down and turned round and walked back to the door, and somewhere in those four steps a number assembled itself, and the number was about what that had cost, and it landed on you before you got to the handle.
And then you washed your hands and got on with the evening and did not mention it.
That is the third time this month.
I want to say what this article is not going to do first, because there are two obvious versions of it and both are useless to you.
It is not going to tell you how to waste less.
There is no method here. Nothing about storage, or portions, or using things up, or a system for the fridge. That advice exists in enormous quantities and you have read some of it and it has not touched this, because the thing that hurts is not the quantity of food going out.
And it is not going to tell you that waste is a sin, which is the other version, and which you have half been telling yourself for years.
Because notice what actually happened in those four steps. You did not think about the planet, or about people with nothing. Something simpler and more personal arrived.
You felt like somebody who is not managing properly.
That is the actual content of the guilt, and it is not about food at all. A bag going out is evidence, in your own head, that you have failed to keep control of something you are supposed to keep control of, and it arrives with a small verdict attached about the kind of woman who lets that happen.
That is what needs answering, and no storage tip is going to answer it.
Behold the fowls of the air
There is a passage in Matthew about birds, and the detail people skip is the one that helps here.
Behold the fowls of the air: for they sow not, neither do they reap, nor gather into barns; yet your heavenly Father feedeth them. Are ye not much better than they? (Matthew 6:26, King James Version)
They sow not, neither do they reap, nor gather into barns.
Nor gather into barns. That is the phrase.
Sowing and reaping are work, and He says they do not do those. But gathering into barns is not work. Gathering into barns is storage. It is the keeping of a surplus against the future, which is exactly the thing you are berating yourself for failing at.
And birds are specifically described as not doing it.
They eat what is there. Some of it is missed and some of it falls and some of it is wasted entirely, because that is what happens when anything eats, and the account does not treat that as a failure of management. It treats it as the ordinary condition of being fed rather than being in control of supply.
And notice where the sentence goes: yet your heavenly Father feedeth them. The feeding is not contingent on the storage. The birds are fed while not gathering, which is the whole point being made.
Now I want to be careful, because that passage has been used badly. It is not an instruction to be careless, and it does not say plan nothing, and Proverbs is full of good sense about provision that I am not going to pretend away.
What it does is refuse the link you have made. You have joined together two things: the amount that goes in your bin, and whether you are a person who is managing. Matthew 6:26 puts a creature that gathers nothing at all under God's feeding without one word of criticism.
Being fed has never once depended on gathering into barns, and the bag going out is not a report on whether you are managing. Matthew 6:26 puts the creature that stores nothing under the Father's feeding without criticism, and the Holy Spirit is the one present in four steps back from a bin.
Some waste is the cost of feeding people
Here is the practical part, and it is arithmetic rather than comfort.
A household that wastes nothing is a household that is running slightly hungry.
That is not a slogan, it is how it works. The only way to have nothing left over is to buy exactly what will be eaten, which requires you to know in advance who will be in, what everybody will feel like, whether somebody will be late, and whether one of them has gone off a thing this week without telling anybody.
You cannot know that. So you buy slightly more than the minimum, because the alternative is to buy slightly less, and slightly less means somebody goes without on a Thursday.
Which means the waste in your bin is not an error in your system. It is the margin you are carrying so that nobody in your house is short, and you are paying it deliberately, and you have been treating the receipt for it as evidence against yourself.
And here is the part that is worth knowing about the specific thing you keep binning. It is nearly always the same category: fresh things, bought hopefully, at the start of a week, for a version of the week that did not happen.
That is not carelessness either. That is you buying for the household you meant to have, which is a hopeful act rather than a careless one.
What is in that bag is the margin that keeps anybody from going short, and it has never once been an error in a system. The written word puts the fed creature outside the business of gathering, and the Spirit of God is the one present where a household is being carried rather than audited.
Empty the one thing, and do not calculate
So here is the assignment, and the second half is the discipline.
Empty the one thing in the fridge you have been avoiding, and do not calculate the cost.
You know which one. There is something in there that has been past it for a while, and you have moved it twice, and you have not dealt with it because dealing with it means admitting it, and while it is still in the fridge it is not officially waste yet.
That is why it is still there. Not because you have not got round to it.
Take it out and empty it and wash the container and put the container back.
And then, on the way back in, do not do the sum.
That is the entire exercise. The four steps are where the damage happens, and the sum is automatic and it will start assembling itself before you have got to the door.
When it starts, say something out loud instead. It genuinely does not matter what. Say the name of what you are doing next. Talk to the cat. Say a line of the psalm if that is nearer to hand.
You are not trying to feel differently about waste. You are interrupting a calculation that has run automatically for years and that has never once made you throw away less, and has only ever added a verdict to a bin bag.
And do this once. Not as a new practice. Once, with the thing you have been avoiding.
You are able to interrupt the calculation, and the sum has never once made anybody throw away less food. Matthew 6:26 keeps the feeding entirely separate from the storing, and the Holy Spirit is the one present in four steps back from a bin.
So here is what I believe is going out over somebody who did the sum on the way back in.
You are not careless, and a bag of waste has never once been a moral account of your week. I am not going to give you a system for the fridge and I am not going to tell you that waste is a sin. Matthew 6:26 says yet your heavenly Father feedeth them, and it is the Holy Spirit and not my saying so who takes a verdict off a woman walking back from her own bin.
And this, which is the word I came with:
What is in that bag is the margin that keeps your household from going short, and you have been reading the receipt as evidence against yourself. The written word puts a creature that gathers nothing under the Father's feeding with no criticism at all, and the Spirit of God is the one who is with you in the four steps.
The one thing. Out. And do not do the sum.
Declare this over yourself
- Sum that assembles itself in four steps between the bin and the back door, you were automatic and you have never once made me throw away less. Matthew 6:26 says yet your heavenly Father feedeth them, so by the Holy Spirit I empty the one thing and say something out loud instead, in the name of Jesus.
- Verdict that arrives with the bag about the kind of woman who lets this happen, you were never about food and you were never true. The word puts a creature that gathers into no barns at all under the Father's feeding, and by the Holy Spirit I am done reading my own bin as a report.
- Father, You said the birds neither reap nor gather into barns and that You feed them anyway. Your word says are ye not much better than they, so by Your Spirit I carry the margin that keeps this house from going short, and I do not audit myself for it.
